Starting a Dog Walking Service on the Cheap

It takes very little to start up a dog walking business. In fact, its a great business to start if you're broke, because most of what's important with dog walking is either free, or you already possess it.

The two most important things to have when you start a dog walking business are a love of dogs and a strong sense of responsibility. Both of those cost nothing to you.

What you will need is time and motivation and the ability to talk to people you don't know easily. Because your budget is small you won't be able to do much advertising and you won't yet be able to pay for dog walker's insurance or for a business license, or even for your own business checking account at first. This is okay for now, at the beginning, because as you start to make money you can set aside 20% or more of your profits towards whatever is the most important business expenditure first.

I would recommend working through the list in the following order: get a business license (maybe $ 50, depends on your county), then a checking account ($ 30 or so for checks), then dog walking insurance (about $ 150 a year), then advertising ($ 150 in the phone book), then extra gear (another $ 100).

But let's start with what you really need to get started. To walk dogs you need a leash, some dog cookies for treats, some plastic bags to manage dog dirt. You should already have a dog leash, but if you don't you can either use your clients' leashes, or get your own. Get a good one with a lifetime warranty and a way to hold on to the dog at a very short distance. Do not get one of the extending leashes, as these do not give enough control over the dog. The leash will cost about $ 18.

You can use hard cheese for treats.

Its actually cheaper than packaged dog treats and most dogs like it more. It does get a bit messy, so keep it in a little plastic food bag in your pocket. For plastic bags to pick up dog waste you can use the thin plastic shopping bags. Carry twice as many as you think you'll need.

The next thing you'll need is clients. Because you're new to this, the best way is to offer your services as a free trial the first time. Knock on doors or go to dog parks and introduce yourself. You'll need to have a list of references that people can call so they can check you out. Unless you're getting your first dog walks from friends or friends of friends (this is a terrific place to start), people will need a way to verify that you're responsible enough to walk their dogs.

This is where a flyer and a business card come in. You may be able to skip these two items, but probably not. Hopefully you have a computer and a printer, so you can make a simple flyer that explains your services. Make a separate page for your list of references -- people do not like to see their phone numbers hanging up in public, so only give the reference list to people who are truly interested in your services.

You can make your own business cards, but really the best way is to get some professionally done. They cost about $ 40 or less. Online printers frequently offer them for free, but you still have to pay for shipping. You will be using these business cards everywhere, so they are a worthwhile investment. Put your name, phone number and email on your business card, plus where you walk dogs. Do not put your rates on the card, because as you get more experience you'll be able to charge more, and it would be nice if you don't have to reprint
